The Mystery and Melancholy of a Street

Titled after Giorgio de Chirico’s 1914 metaphysical painting “Melancholy and Mystery of a Street”. This series is an attempt to unpack some of de Chirico's themes in a sequence of street photographs and capture a tension between the familiar everyday world and an underlying psychological space. To uncover a dreamlike layer of reality, freighted with the classical themes of tragedy, mystery and melancholy.

The work references de Chirico’s motifs of partially obscured figures, emerging shadows, arches, deserted public spaces and formal repetition.
